Ketterzee

Sea! Tattoos! Unscupulousness!

Ketterzee is a foreign god, brought from unknown lands by grinning, tattooed sailors. With their smiles they explained that Ketterzee controlled the seas, and was unpredictable and duplicitous, luring men to sea with promises of wealth and later dashing them against stone. Best to stay on Ketterzee’s good side, they explained, taking a beer you so kindly offered to buy them. You can’t stop Ketterzee taking you away when he wanted you, but you could fascinate him with tales and jokes and descriptions, and if you entertained him enough, he would let your soul go to wherever you wished to go. Best remember all you can, and remember it well. You can bring no journal to the deep, but you could etch every worthy moment or story or joke into your skin with ink, and hope you had something to satisfy him. He points to a line of dull blue ink on his wiry arm, one of many. He explains it’s the best joke he’s ever heard. You ask him to tell you it, but he pulls away and covers his arm. He can’t tell you the joke, he explains. What if you told it to Ketterzee before him?
